The lion, asleep in this picture, is one of the major predators of the African savannah. It used to live in some areas of Europe and Asia as well, but now it has virtually disappeared in those regions. Lions have short legs, a long and muscular body and a big head, which in males is surrounded by a thick mane. It lives in small groups, resting during the day and hunting at night. Its favourite preys are zebras and antelopes. The females generally hunt more and are more ferocious than males.
