Glacier mass balance

In order to evaluate the “state” of a glacier, and to understand if it is a glacial advance or a glacial retreat phase, it is not sufficient to evaluate the variations in the position of the glacier’s front, but the delicate equilibrium of snow supply, and therefore the formation of new ice, and the loss of ice in the ablation area, must be taken into consideration. In other words the variations in the volume of ice must be evaluated, and the glacier mass balance must be studied.
