The dodo (Raphus cucullatus, Linnaeus 1758) was a columbiform bird of the family Raphidae, endemic to the island of Mauritius. It was unable to fly, fed on fruits and built its nest on the ground. It rapidly became extinct from 1658 to1662 as a consequence of the arrival on the island of the Portuguese and then the Dutch.
