Cetraria islandica

Cetraria islandica is found in areas of Eurasia and North America with an Arctic climate and at high altitudes in temperate zones. This lichen is also found in Italy in the Alps, the Northern Apennines and the highest mountains of the Southern Apennines up to Aspromonte. The common name ‘Iceland lichen’ probably derives from the fact that the Icelanders and people of Northern Europe first used this lichen, both for food and medicinal purposes, while in Central Mediterranean Europe it was certainly not used until much later.
