The force of the wind can be indicated either by measuring its speed, in other words in knots, which correspond to miles per hour (1 knot = 1 mile per hour = 1.85 km per hour), or using the scale proposed by Francis Beaufort, a British navy admiral  who lived at the start of the nineteenth century.
