The photovoltaic train

In Italy the PVTRAIN project by Trenitalia (co-financed by the European Union) plans the installation of photovoltaic roof tiles on 10 prototypes of railway vehicles in order to recharge accumulators and therefore improve energy efficiency. The energy produced is used on carriages to recharge accumulators both when the vehicle stops and travels; on locomotives it is used to recharge accumulators and to heat supply pneumatic pipes to lift the pantograph; on wagons to recharge accumulators, to feed GPS and electro-mechanic devices for the control of dangerous goods. In this way the CO2 estimated annual reduction amounts to 1970 kg per carriage.a.
