Lake Vostok has been reached
After over two decades of drilling, on Sunday 5th February, Russian scientists finally reached Lake Vostok, the largest subglacial water basin in Antarctica. The team of “drillers” stopped at the depth of 3,768 metres, after having reached the surface of the lake. According to the researchers, the waters of the lake might be home to living organisms that have never been seen before and that can survive because of the mild temperature of the water that never drops below ten degrees Celsius.
