Vertical axis generator

This is a vertical axis wind turbine (i.e. the rotating axis of the turbine is vertical/perpendicular to the ground). The shape of the blades is quite particular and has been studied in order to best exploit the force of the wind. The photograph was taken in 1988 near Livermore in California (United States).
