Use of animals
The circus seal stereotype, gently balancing a ball on its nose and jumping through rings, is actually the typical California sea lion. In natural conditions, the California sea lion is a brilliant animal, it is faster than any sea lion or common seal. In fact it is a kind of eared seal, that can swim at a speed of approximately 40 kilometres per hour. Unlike other sea lions, this variety does not have a mane. When it dives in the water, the animal’s heartbeat slows down, so that it can swim without breathing for almost ten minutes before rising to the surface again. This possibility gives it a large advantage when in search of fish, squid and shell fish, which are its ideal diet. Photo by Tiziana Bosco.
