The first woman in space

On 16 June 1963, Valentina Tereshkova was launched into space on the spacecraft Vostok 6. So she became the first woman to travel in space, completing 48 orbits around the Earth and spending almost three days in space. After completing the mission, Tereshkova was bestowed the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. She also became spokeswoman of the Soviet government and won a United Nations’ Gold Medal for Peace.
