The African elephant

African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. They are slightly bigger than their Asian cousins and can be recognised by their enormous ears (Asian elephants have smaller, more rounded ears). The large surface area of their ears, covered with blood vessels, helps these huge animals to disperse excess body heat and to keep cool. Photo by Nancy Elera
