Number of extrasolar planets discovered

The graph shows the number of extrasolar planets (or exoplanets) that were discovered up to 2011, with the indication of the methods utilized to observe them. At the end of 2011, the total number of planets that were discovered was 716, and out of these, 188 were discovered in 2011 alone. The graph clearly shows that the number of newly discovered planets has an exponential growth. The most effective research methods are the radial velocity and transit methods.
