At the turn of the century, Kolmanskop was a mining city. Today, its Art Nouveau buildings are buried in sand since it was abandoned a long time ago. Built when the diamond trade was thriving and those who worked in the trade needed a city, it was abandoned in 1956 when the trade collapsed because new diamond bodies were found southwards, in the Orange River.
