Dark matter

Applying Newton’s Law we know that in a gravitationally bound system, like that of a galaxy, the rotation speed of stars will decrease as the distance from the centre increases. However, direct observation of hundreds of galaxies has clearly shown that this speed increases rather than diminishes. This phenomenon can be explained assuming the existence of dark matter which is responsible for the increase in the observed speed of stars.
