Contractile vacuoles

As long as they live in freshwater, which is a poorly concentrated environment, Protista tend to soak up water by “osmosis” all the time. Paramecia are equipped with special structures called “contractile vacuoles”. Excess water flows into the vacuoles and out through the channels. When a vacuole is full, a small pore opens and the vacuole contracts, thereby letting water flow out.
