Cactuses

On a cactus trunk there are thorns instead of leaves. This modification has been determined by the need to reduce the surface of the leaves, through which  transpiration and therefore a loss of water takes place, to the minimum amount. Cacti grow in arid areas where rainfall is very scarce. Therefore in order to resist, during the course of evolution, the cacti  have developed the capacity to accumulate and store large quantities of water.
