Introduction
Biomass
In 2009 biomasses satisfied approximately 10% of energy requirement worldwide (International Energy Agency Key World Energy Statistics 2011). Exploitation of this resource is not distributed homogeneously across the Planet. In fact, the developing countries obtain an average of 38% of their energy from biomasses, with 1,074 Mtoe/annum and in some of these countries this resource satisfies up to 90% of the energy requirements. On the other hand, in the industrialized countries, biomasses contribute to only 3% used for energy purposes, with 156 Mtoe/year. In particular, the United states obtain 3.2% of their energy from biomasses, while Europe obtains 3.5% overall.
Some European Countries, in particular, have developed the exploitation of biomasses more than others. Finland obtains 18% of its energy from biomasses, Sweden 17%, Austria 13%, and Italy only 2%.
