Earthquake in Emilia Romagna
A series of tremors with epicentre between Ferrara and Modena shook northern Italy last weekend. It was a relevant event: in fact, the most intense tremor measured 5.9 on the Richter scale (medium-high intensity) on the night between Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 May and was followed by over one hundred aftershocks of magnitude between 4 and 5 points on the Richter scale. This earthquake, which has unfortunately caused victims and heavy damages, is the result of the movement of the Adriatic plate towards the north, a phenomenon that had already triggered other earthquakes in the past and that have been registered in historical records: the most recent occurred in 1987, while the oldest and most powerful dates back to 1117.
