New underground record
The longest cave in Italy can be found on the Piano di Tivano (or rather, under it!) in the province of Como. In fact, thanks to the junction of the Tacchi-Zelbio and the Stoppani-Ingresso Fornitori complexes, the karst system now measures 58 km and has broken the Italian record. Speleologists from Lombardy have been trying to find the connection between the two karst complexes for twenty years, but water and sand obstructed their passage. The ideal conditions for the feat were brought about by an exceptional period of drought and low temperatures that gave rise to the emptying of five karst siphons, usually full of water, and allowed the passage of the speleologists. Their tenacity did the rest: after many hours of exploration, finally the junction was found.
