Rocks and minerals
The oldest rocks on Earth
Planet Earth was formed 4.7 billion years ago, and at the beginning of its history it only consisted of material in melted state. Melted state materials are distributed at different distances from the centre of the Earth according to their density: the lightest materials occupy a layer that is close to the surface; they cool down and transform into solid compounds. These solid compounds are the oldest rocks on the Earth.Related topics
