Water is one of the oldest sources for the production of energy. It is a renewable, abundant and clean source. Today, hydroelectric power accounts for a little over 2% of the world power demand (energy used  directly + energy transformed into other energy products + electric power produced in power stations) and 14% of the electric power used worldwide is obtained from 800,000 operating dams, out of which 45,000 are over 15 metres high. Worldwide, reservoirs occupy a total area of 300,000 sq. km, an area as big as Italy. For many countries, hydroelectric power is an extremely important source for the production of electric power. In Norway 96.7% of the production of electric power is hydroelectric, in Brazil 75.2%, in Venezuela 64.8% and in Canada 60%.
