It is difficult to build an atmospheric circulation model, because a large number of factors contribute to the shifting masses of air in the atmosphere, however the fundamental principle is that the gases that compose the atmosphere tend to reach a balanced situation, that involves a uniform distribution of energy, thus making the temperatures and the pressures across the entire planet uniform. The atmospheric circulation “motor” is therefore obtained from the redistribution of energy received from the Sun. Solar radiation, in fact, is different at the various latitudes, therefore the equatorial regions are hotter than the polar ones. The atmosphere tries to balance this difference by moving masses of hot air from regions in which there is an excess of heat towards the colder regions, in the attempt to decrease the difference in temperature between the equator and the poles.
