World Day to Combat Desertification 2019
In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly declared the 17 June “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought” to raise the public’s awareness on the problem of draught and promote implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in those countries experiencing serious draught and/or desertification, in particular in Africa (UNCCD). Since then, the States that are Parties to the Convention, the United Nations system organisations, the international and non-governmental organisations and other players involved celebrate this particular day with numerous activities all over the world, aiming to promote good practices that are able to help reduce the size of the serious problem of desertification.
This day is an opportunity to analyse the actions promoted within the Convention and assess the progress made by the 197 countries that have ratified it in the field of sustainable management of territory and land, looking at the next 25 years and the objective of achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), the focus of the UNCCD 2018-2030 Strategy and the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Cooperation between all the parties is essential to achieving land degradation neutrality, that is ensuring that losses of land are counterbalanced by improvements in other areas that are already degraded.
The 25th anniversary of the Convention and of the World Day to Combat Desertification (# 2019WDCD) is being celebrated this year. For the occasion, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is commemorating 25 years of progress made by the various Countries in sustainable land management. At the same time, UNCCD is looking at an overview of the next 25 years, which will be dedicated to achieving land degradation neutrality.
The theme this year is “Let’s Grow the Future Together”, to underline the importance of global participation and of inclusive cooperation to restore degraded land and help to achieve global sustainable development goals.
