World Environment Day 2019
5 June is the day dedicated to the Environment celebrated worldwide. World Environment Day (WED) was established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly with the aim of raising awareness among the worldwide population on the sustainable use of resources, environmental protection and protection of biodiversity. The date was chosen to commemorate the first UN Conference on the environment held in Stockholm from 5 to 16 June 1972: it was on this occasion, in fact, that the Stockholm Declaration was adopted defining the 26 principles on the rights and responsibilities of mankind with regard to the environment.
Each year the event has a different theme and a different host country, where the official celebrations take place: the theme this year is air pollution and the host country will be China, a choice that is by no means random. Indeed, the environmental issue in this great Asian country is now so serious that it is becoming the leader in renewable energy sources and in the battle against air pollution. The slogan in 2019 is “take the mask challenge” and for the occasion a special hashtag has been launched on the social networks, #beatairpollution.
