Best packaging 2019: when packaging is environmentally friendly

Packaging is evolving and becoming more sustainable: it may be made up of recycled, compostable or easily recyclable material, it is lighter so that less raw material is used. The Packaging Oscar is awarded each year in recognition of the most sustainable packaging; this is a contest set up in 1957 by the Italian Institute of Packaging to reward the best packaging designed or marketed in Italy.

The 23 finalists of the Best Packaging Award 2019 (Packaging Oscar) will be on show during the Milano Design Week, from 9 to 14 April, in the heart of the Brera Design District, at the Puorquoi Pas Design Space (Via Tito Speri 1). The competing packaging ranges from food to personal care, and includes transport and logistics. The 2019 edition, held in collaboration with CONAI (National Packaging Consortium), is dedicated to the environment and to promoting solutions that are outstanding in terms of preventing environmental impact. The aim is to reward packaging able to respond to the needs of the market, consumers and sustainability by reducing the quantity of raw materials used, using recycled materials, switching to single materials (even for rigid or flexible multi-layered packaging), redesigning of the shape and optimising dimensions, without forgetting the new bio-based materials.
