International Forest Day 2019

Forests and trees protect us in an infinite number of ways. They provide us with the clean air that we breathe and the water that we drink. They shelter and protect the biodiversity of the planet and are our natural defence against climate change. Life on earth is made possible and sustainable by the presence of trees and forests. The importance of forests is remembered on 21 March by celebrating the International Forest Day set up on 21 March 2012 by the United Nations General Assembly.

The theme in 2019 is “Forests and education”: learning to understand our forests and providing children with a basis for better understanding their importance is an essential step towards safeguarding natural resources. Today, over half the world population lives in urban areas, a percentage that will reach 70% by 2050: people are ever more disconnected from nature and this leads to a lack of awareness and understanding of the benefits linked to forests. This is why we need to bring forests back into all our lives, starting from the early years of life.

Each year, various events celebrate and raise public awareness of the importance of protecting forests and trees, for the benefit of present and future generations.
