International Forest Day
Forests and trees protect us in an infinite number of ways. They provide us with the clean air that we breathe and the water that we drink. They shelter and protect the biodiversity of the planet and are our natural defence against climate change. Life on earth is made possible and sustainable by the presence of trees and forests. The importance of forests is remembered on 21 March by celebrating the International Forest Day. The theme in 2018 is “Forests and sustainable cities” to remind us that, with the constant growth of urbanisation, urban trees and forests make cities cleaner, greener and healthier places. They are, in fact, natural air conditioners and cool the air, filtering harmful pollutants from the it and helping to mitigate climate changes.
Each year, various events celebrate and raise public awareness of the importance of protecting forests and trees, for the benefit of present and future generations.
