The Maldives to be a Biosphere Reserve

The Maldives may become the first country to be a “UNESCO Biosphere Reserve”. In order to reach this goal, the Maldives nation has undertaken to reach the targets indicated in the Aichi Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, guaranteeing that over 50% of the atolls will implement the conditions set by the Plan by the end of 2017. Threatened by climate changes, the Maldives have been committed to awakening public opinion and to conservation of their natural reserves for decades. This effort was also highlighted by the President of the Maldives at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20, stating the intention to significantly strengthen the level of protection of the marine environment.
