Bacteria as miners

The ability of chemoautotrophic bacteria to take energy from the oxidation of inorganic compounds is used to extract ores. The micro-organism most commonly used is the Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, a bacterium that usually lives in sulphur-rich environments.
