Sea in love

SALINER NEW ZEALAND

In Italy, the “mare in amore” phenomenon occurs very often: the part of the sea coast where this occurs is between Cesenatico and Cattolica, where Noctiluca scintillans microalgae, which are able to emit a bioluminescence on starry nights, create a sparkling effect on the surface of the sea.
The Noctiluca scintillans, can reach a length of 1 mm, and most of its entire vital process is performed on the surface of the sea. The development of this microalga is not the cause of any worries as no decrease in the dissolved oxygen in the sea beds has been noted. When the algae die, they look like gelatinous filaments, which apparently are not harmful for the environment.
